Three McEnery Obituaries

At the National Library of Ireland yesterday I searched the Irish Times archives and found the following obituaries:

McEnery—April 14, 1931, fortified by the Rites of Holy Mother Church, at her residence, The Hollies, Killiney, Co. Dublin, to the inexpressible grief of her sorrowing husband and children, Kate Mary McEnery, late of Ballyhale, Co. Kilkenny, wife of John McEnery, and mother of Rev. Fathers Joseph, Louis, James, Eugene, and Thomas McEnery, and of John A. McEnery, Liverpool, and Patrick J. McEnery, barrister-at-law, Dublin. R.I.P. [Weekly Irish Times, Saturday, April 25, 1931]

McEnery—June 16, 1933, at Convent of Mary Immaculate, Sicklinghall, Yorkshire, Mother M. Louise McEnery, daughter of the late Thomas and Mary McEnery, of Ballintober, Newcastle West. County Limerick, in the 73^rd year of her age and the 50^th of her religious profession. R.I.P. [Irish Times, June 21, 1933]

McEnery—July 24, 1934 at Dunbar, Scotland, Maurice, son of the late Thomas McEnery of Ballintubber, Newcastle West, Co. Limerick. Funeral took place on July 27 in Coatbridge. [Irish Times, Tuesday, October 2, 1934]

Mostly McLaughlins of Brooklyn

While at my sister's house, I have been trying to do work on various members of the family. I worked today on the McLaughlin family of Brooklyn. Ellen McLaughlin is my great-great-grandmother, married to Hugh Donnelly. They lived in Belleville, Essex Co., NJ. She was probably the brother of Henry McLaughlin (1813-1892) of Dromore, Co. Tyrone. Another 1908 Curley Death in Wilkes-Barre

Margaret, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Martin Curley, died in Wilkes-Barre on 31 March 1908, the same day as Margaret, daughter of Michael and Delia Curley. Coincidence? Or was she also at the ill-fated birthday party?

A Mary Curley lived at 42 Old Kilmainham Road, Dublin, in 1908.

Michael Curley born in Dublin?

The marriage licenses of  both William Curley (1921) and Joseph Curley (1940) state that their father Michael J. Curley was born in Dublin.

Dimond/Diamond Family Connection to Donnellys

Recently going through old family photos I came upon a photograph of a 20-or-so-year-old Mary Dimond inscribed "To Aunt Mary and Margaret Donnelly". Was she related to them through her father Hugh Diamond's first wife, Mary [last name unknown], who was born in New York? Or was this simply an "honorary" relationship? Both families were living in Belleville, and both have connections to Brooklyn.

More progress on the Kilcommons Family

The other day I checked the archives of the Wilkes-Barre paper to see what I could find.

On March 7, 1895, the paper reported that "Michael Curley of Oliver's Mills was calling on Georgetown friends last evening."

On August 18, 1896, it reported that "A son arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Curley."

On January 1, 1897, it reported that "The Misses Kilcummins and Miss Mame Kane of New York are being entertained by Mr. and Mrs. Michael Curley of Spruce Street, Georgetown."

Reporting on Delia's funeral, the paper noted that the flowers were carried by Edward Leslie. He most likely was a relative, since the marriage of Mary Kilcommons, a minor, was consented to by a John Leslie. Or perhaps John Leslie was named guardian of the three Kilcommons children after the death of their mother.

Delia Curley's death

The Pennsylvania Death Index also includes an entry for a stillborn, unnamed Curley in Luzerne County on October 2, 1911, the date of Delia Curley's death. But curiously she is not listed.

Donnelly Family of Belleville, NJ

The Donnelly family of Belleville gets more and more interesting, especially the children of Peter Donnelly and Elizabeth Cole. I have known for a while that their son Hugh married a Methodist and converted. I have just discovered that their daughter Sarah (b. say 1846) married an Albert Bossoms/Bossims at Roseville Baptist Church. Their daughter Mary (b. 13 February 1836) married a John J. Mandenscheid in Bloomfield, but I do not yet know who performed the ceremony.

Death of Ellen and Margaret Curley

I have known for a while about the family tradition that says that Ellen and Margaret Curley, my father's sisters, died young of typhoid fever after eating tainted ice cream at a party. I found a while ago a 1911 reference to a "recent" epidemic of typhoid traced to a dairy that had not sanitized its milk buckets. I now have dates for the deaths of Ellen and Margaret. Ellen (Ella in the index) died on March 29, 1908, and Margaret on March 31. This fits the story that the family had just come home from burying one girl, only to find the other one dead.

Kane Family

I have had something of a breakthrough regarding the Kane Family. My great-grandparents were Daniel and Sarah (Keane/Kane) Kilcommons of Wilkes-Barre. Pa. Their daughter Margaret married George Brohan. The witness at his naturalization on 21 February 1905 in New York was Patrick F. Kane of 65 Spring St., New York. He most likely was a relative. A quick search did not turn anything up, but at least I have a definite name and place to start from.

DNA results

Through DNA testing, I did connect with a Curley family in Cincinnati, Ohio. They trace back to Co. Roscommon. Now I have to start with their ancestor and see if, working forward, I can find my grandfather.

Collins/Shanahan/McEnery

I just found in the 1905 NY State census, living on West 126th Street in Manhattan: Josephine Collins, age 36, b. US, in US 17 years, runs a lodging house; her cousin Mrs. Mary Shanahan, age 27, b. Ireland, 18 years in the US; Mary Shanahan's daughter Eileen, age 9. b. US, and Josephine Collins's cousin Patrick "McHenry", age 36, b. Ireland, 16 years in the US. All are citizens.

Finally using DNA

I finally moved into the twenty-first century and have sent in my DNA to see if I can connect with other Curleys, since the paper trail has not proved successful.

Jennings Family, Montclair NJ and Murphy Family, Yuba Co., CA

I have added a good deal of information to WeRelate.org concerning the Jennings family of Montclair, Essex Co., NJ and the Murphy family of Yuba County, Ca. I am looking forward to collaborating with others using this wiki-based genealogy site.

Haley's from Rahara, Co. Roscommon to Essex County, NJ

Bridget Haley Oles's headstone in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Bloomfield, says that she was a native of Rahara, Co. Roscommon. Her sister Margaret married Michael Bradley.

Kilcommons of Monmouth County, NJ

Moving some old files of mine I came upon a 1992 letter from Edna Ball who said that "His [our great-grandfather Daniel Kilcommons] family did not settle in New York, and later, Pennsylvania, as he did. His family settled in Freehold and Matawan. The (our) family did not keep in contact with them."

Kilcommons of Monmouth Co., NJ

I have added a good deal of information about Kilcommonses of Monmouth County, NJ to WeRelate. Most of them came from Kilbegnet parish, Co. Galway.

Haley, Havey and related Families of Yuba Co, CA

I have just entered in WeRelate a number of birth and baptismal records for descendants of the Haley families who went to California during the Gold Rush. These are from the records of Immaculate Conception R.C. Church in Smartsville.

Owen/Eugene McEnery of Monagea Parish

I think I have satisfied myself that Owen McEnery and Eugene McEnery are the same person. When, years ago, I received the report from the Limerick Regional Archives, the parents of Catherine, Bridget, Patrick, John, Thomas and Mary were identified as Owen McEnery and Mary Collins. Today I found Thomas's baptismal record at the brs.genealogy site. In this record, the names of the parents are given as Eugene McEnery and Maria Collins. Now if I can just get in touch with the O'Driscoll who has his family tree on the web and is presumably the great-grandson of Eugene (and grandson of John, and son of William Joseph O'Driscoll and Margaret McEnery) I could find out his sources for Eugene's birth and death dates.
